The Modern Tradition: Why World Rum Day?

Fast forward to the 21st century. Despite its incredible history and global reach, rum lacked a single, unified international day of celebration. Sure, there were regional festivals and National Rum Days in various places but nothing truly brought everyone together.

That’s where Paul Jackson, a respected spirits writer and the mind behind the World Rum Guide, stepped in. In 2019, he founded World Rum Day. His vision was simple: to create a dedicated global for rum lovers, distillers, and bars worldwide to unite and truly appreciate this magnificent spirit. He recognized that rum, with its incredible breadth-from light, crisp white rums perfect for mixing, deserved its own global spotlight.

The choice of the second Saturday of July each year wasn’t random. Placing it on a Saturday makes it easy for everyone to get involved. Whether you’re planning a quiet evening at home, heading out to a local spot, or even traveling to a distillery, a weekend day offers the perfect opportunity. It also slots neatly into what’s become a bit of a “rum season” in early July, with other popular cocktail days like National Mojito Day and National Pina Colada Day often occurring around the same time. This helps build excitement and keeps rum front and center for a stretch of the summer.

Today, we’re not just celebrating a drink; we’re toasting to history, craftsmanship and sheer joy it brings to our shakers and our palates. So, as you enjoy your rum today, remember you’re not just savoring a delicious drink. You’re part of a worldwide toast, a modern tradition celebrating a spirit steeped in human history, innovation and global connection.
