We asked Hemstone, heading to the Paris World Cocktail Competition, a few questions about his journey. ” Here’s what Hemstone had to say:”

How did you first get interested in mixology, and what inspired you to pursue it professionally in Kenya?

My interest in mixology sparked from a fascination with flavor combinations and artistry of crafting unique drinks. This curiosity led me to explore the diverse world of spirits, ingredients and techniques involved in mixology.

Inspired by Kenya’s vibrant culinary scene and the growing appreciation for artisanal cocktails, I decided pursue mixology as a Profession. I honed my skills through training programs and practical experience, immersing myself in the local bar culture and experimenting with local ingredients to create signature cocktails that reflect the essence of Kenya.

Can you describe your journey from early days in mixology to being selected to represent Kenya in this prestigious competition?

My mixology journey began with a fascination for the alchemy of combining flavors. I started experimenting at home, devouring books and online resources, and practicing classic cocktails. I then sought out opportunities to learn from experienced bartenders in Kenya working my way up from bar backing to junior bartender, absorbing knowledge and honing my skills. I focused on understanding the nuances of local ingredients, incorporating them into my creations and developing my own signature style.

I participated in local competitions, gaining valuable experience and feedback, constantly pushing myself to innovate and refine my techniques. This dedication and passion culminated in being selected to represent Kenya in this prestigious competition, a true honor and a testament to the vibrant mixology scene in our country.

Who are some of your biggest mentors or influences in the Kenyan mixology scene?

While I’m constantly learning and drawing inspiration from many sources, some key figures in the Kenyan mixology scene have been particularly influential. I’ve learned a great deal from Dale Degroff, Yangdup Lama the international mixologist during their visit in Kenya. Their expertise in working with local ingredients, the innovative approach to cocktail creation, and their dedication to elevating the craft in Kenya have been incredibly inspiring.

I also appreciate the support and camaraderie within the Kenyan bartending community: we learn and grow together. Beyond individuals, and growing interest in cocktails and appreciation for mixology within Kenya itself is a huge influence, constantly pushing us to explore new flavors and techniques.

What does it mean to you to represent Kenya on an international stage like this?

Representing Kenya on an international stage like this is an incredible honor and a huge responsibility. It means showcasing the talent and creativity of Kenyan mixologists to the world, highlighting the unique flavors and ingredients we have in our country. It’s an opportunity to put Kenyan mixology on the map, demonstrating our passion, innovation, and commitment to the craft.

It’s also a chance to connect with other mixologists from around the globe, learn from them and share our experiences. Ultimately, it’s about making Kenya proud and contributing to the growth and recognition of our vibrant mixology scene.

What was your reaction when you found out you were selected?

When I found out I was absolutely thrilled! It was a mix of excitement, disbelief and immense gratitude. All the hard work, the late nights experimenting, and the dedication to honing my craft felt incredibly validated. I was also immediately filled with a sense of responsibility and pride, knowing I’d be representing Kenya on such a prestigious platform. It was a truly an unforgettable moment.

How have you been preparing for the competition in France? Can you describe your training regimen?

My preparation for the competition in France has been intense and multifaceted. It involves:

  • I’ve been meticulously refining my cocktail recipes, ensuring the balance of flavors is perfect and showcasing the unique ingredients I’ll be using. This includes repeated practice and adjustments based on taste tests.
  • I’m honing my bartending techniques, from precise measurements and efficient pouring to mastering garnishing and presentation. Speed and accuracy are crucial, so I’ve been practicing consistently.
  • I’ve been deepening my understanding of the ingredients I’ll be using, particularly any unique Kenyan elements, ensuring I can knowledgeably about their origins and flavor profiles. I’m also researching potential French ingredients to complement my recipes.
  • Visualizing success and practicing under pressure are key. I’m focusing on maintaining composure and confidence throughout the competition.
  • I’m studying the competition format, the judges’ criteria and past winners to develop a strategic approach.
  • Bartending is physically demanding, so maintaining a good level of fitness to ensure I can perform at my best throughout the competition.

What are you looking forward to about competing in France?

I’m looking forward to several things about competing in France:

  • I’m most excited to share my passion for Kenyan mixology with the world, highlighting our unique flavors and ingredients.
  • Competing alongside top mixologists from around the globe is an incredible opportunity to learn new techniques, trends and perspectives.
  • I’m eager to immerse myself in French culture and experience their vibrant culinary scene.
  • Connecting with fellow mixologists, industry professionals, and potential collaborators is a valuable aspect of the competition.

What are your goals for the competition? What would you consider a successful outcome?

To represent Kenya proudly and to perform to the best of my abilities’. I aim to network with fellow mixologists, learn from their expertise and build lasting connections within the industry to gain experience.

The successful outcome will be clearly communicating the story behind my cocktails and the inspiration drawn from Kenya. Receiving positive feedback from the judges and fellow mixologists on the taste, creativity and presentation of my drinks. Establishing meaningful connections with industry professionals and fellow competitors. Leaving the competition with new knowledge, skills and a deeper understanding of the craft. Of course winning would be fantastic, but ultimately, I define success by how well I represent Kenya, how much I learn, and the connections I make.

What message do you hope to send to the world through your participation in this competition?

  • Kenya has a vibrant and unique cocktail culture: I want to showcase the talent, creativity, passion of Kenyan mixologists, highlighting our ability to create world-class cocktails using local ingredients and drawing inspiration from our rich heritage.
  • Kenyan ingredients are exceptional: I aim to demonstrate the incredible diversity and quality of Kenyan produce, spices and other ingredients, encouraging the world to explore and appreciate the unique flavors of our land.
  • Mixology is a powerful form of storytelling: I want to show how cocktails can be more than just drinks; they can be a medium for sharing stories, traditions and cultural experiences, connecting people through flavor and narrative.
